My Thoughts...

I will be the first to tell you that I don't post things like this too often; however today I feel compelled.

I find it interesting that people are so quick to make judgment with little to no facts. Its amusing to me that so many are powerless to use their own education and think on their own. I'm very disappointed that my children will not hear the President of the United States of America encourage them to understand that failure makes you stronger, and to make your failures teach you. To hear that only through being responsible for your own education and using the tools provided will you learn to be more successful.

It happens time and time again, that people don't stop for a minute and think about what they are thinking. I know to some of you that won't make sense and that's ok. When you take a minute to think about what your thinking then you may actually figure out that you weren't thinking at all.

Personally, when I've made bad decisions in haste, I've often times forgotten to think. Thoughts about who I'm impacting, what the repercussions are, and why I'm choosing to make that impact. If people thought more, would there maybe be less crime?

Together we are all people, not matter our background, our education, or our intelligence. The decisions we make everyday not only impact our own lives but they act as a chain reaction to the lives around us. Common sense, thoughts, and caring about others can make a big difference. So I provoke you to think before you act and truly consider your impact on yourself, your family and your world... It may actually make you a smarter person.

For those who called your school to prevent your child from being brain washed. I hope that one day your child too will be educated in a manner that helps them be successful. Maybe one day they will be more open to thought. Thoughts not based on fear, but thoughts grown and designed from the information which they are presented. I know that I'd be ashamed if I'd had called the school then read the speech that was to be given.

One definition of "Prejudice": An adverse judgment or opinion formed beforehand or without knowledge or examination of the facts.

I recall learning in school that you should never judge a book by its cover; maybe you were out that day.

love me, hate me; but please think about it before you choose...

Ray Miller: his story... unfinished

Some of you know my grandfather William Ray Miller, others may not. This is his story as told by him. Its not finished, and it may never be... but its an interesting story, that I wanted to share.

These are his words, unedited that I'm transcribing from his writing on a legal pad he started some years ago:

Father: William L. Miller
Mother: Jemima Troyer

I was born in Portage Co. Ohio in 1917 Aug 29. Lived there with my parents for about 3yrs. Then moved to Holmes Co. Ohio, went to school at a county school "Buena Vista" (one room) for 8 yrs. My Mother died when I was 4 yrs old. Father married the second time to Barbara J. Kandel (Weaver).

Went to Berlin high school 2yrs walked to school about 5 miles. (not legible) Worked for a neighbor's farmfor $.05 per hour. After I quit school, worked for a farmer that could not drive so I did all of the driving for him. When I worked there, I also helped out for a farmer that had a cane press. That is where I had my finger cut off, 16yrs old. When I was eighteen I worked in a shop in Orrville Ohio. I also worked for an Amish farmer who had a dairy farm. Bottled milk and delivered it to Millersburg and Berlin. Bought a new Ford Van in 1940 to deliver the milk.

When I was in my teens I sold (not legible) jacks. Was drafted and went to a C.P.S camp 2-5-42. While there I met Dorothea and married Oct. 27 1943. Lived there till I was discharged on Jan 26-46, then we moved to Ohio. First we lived in an apartment in Millersburg. Then we bought an old house in Benton. Built a 2 story garage in 1948 and lived in the station on the site. We lived up stairs in 4 small rooms...

This is where the story stops on the paper... I know many of you can fill in most of the rest of the story. I can tell you that I'm happy to have been a part of this story. My grandfather has filled a grand role in my life. That is something that I am truly thankful for.

thanks for reading my post today,

My Coaching Philosophy

I became a coach to help kids learn and enjoy the game of football. We have youth programs to help expose kids to the game so that they may begin to learn the fundamentals of the game. Its also a great way to build confidence, courage and teamwork. It also helps them develop a general tendency for a more healthy and active lifestyle. Winning isn't about the score at the end of the game; but what is accomplished on the field.

As role models to our kids it is our responsibility to show them fair play, respect for others and hone their competitive nature. To this day some of my best role models are still the coaches I had when I was involved as a player in youth football. I hope that my involvement in the game helps our kids love the game of football both on the field and off. The most enjoyable moments of coaching for me are seeing the excitement on a players face after they have just made a great play! I think this should be another FUN season for the kids! I and my staff will be working hard to make sure that our players get exposure to both offense and defense!

I hope that you will help us by being a positive influence on your child's time with football. Things as simple as throwing a ball around for 10 minutes at home will be a huge impact on them as they progress through the season. This is about the KIDS, we will be focused on the KIDS and their enjoyment. I will emphasis that this league is for FUN and my goal is to ensure that they have fun!

Sincerely,
Matt Eash

update on Grandfather pt. 2

I again thank you for the thoughts and prayers.

When we had last left Florida my Grandfather was doing quite well. He was working through his rehab for his hip, although he did have a stumble or two. As you may have guessed by now, he's not a man to be held down. He's always on the go, and because of this he did manage to fall at least 2 times that I know of during his stay in the Rehabilitation facility.

This brings us up to date well nearly up to date, last Thursday he started running a fever and as such they ended up taking him to the Hospital ER once again. After the normal rigor of tests it was determined that he had an urinary tract infection. To you and I this may not seem like a big deal however to a 91 year old man with weak kidneys this must be considered more serious. As it turns out they were able to get him onto antibiotics to help tame the infection. As I understand it, the Dr. (s) feel that this may be yet another toll on his rehab and stability. I also understand that his kidney function is still slowly deteriorating.

At this time, when I call to talk to grandpa its hard for him to talk, I guess the antibiotics and other meds can cause yeasts to grow in his throat that make it more difficult. I know that grandpa is a strong man, and I also know that he is a firm believer in God and Jesus Christ. As he's said, its in God's hands and God knows the right thing to do.

This isn't an easy pill to swallow when you are hearing this from your own loved ones. I'll admit, I've been blessed to not have to deal with much death since I was a child. I know that this will never be an easy thing to deal with. Death may be mysterious, it may be unknown, but we can all be assured that some day our time to will come to an end. If there was one thing I could hope its that I too will be able to look squarely at the ones I love, and tell them that I trust God to make the decisions for me.

Together my grandparents have been instrumental to my life and the love they've shared with me has been life changing.

Today whilst I was thinking about my Grandfather; I had this thought today come to my head. Maybe it will mean something to you too?

The life we live, guides the legacy we leave behind...
-- Matthew Eash

I was online last night, looking up some bible verses and I came across a few that I think make sense. I thought maybe I would share a couple with you.

Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand."
John 13:7

Be still, and know that I am God
Psalm 46:10

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid."
John 14:27

Outdated .... Update on My Grandfather...

Sorry to all, just seems like I've been really busy lately.

I wanted to post an update for those who have said prayers and had us in your thoughts. As you know back near the start of the month my grandfather had fallen and broken his left femur (in his hip). The break was such that the head of the femur (the ball) had broken off. The only remedy for such a break is surgery to replace the ball.

So my Mom, Sister, and I headed down to FL to be there for him as he went into surgery. As it turned out Surgery went very well no complications and things looked good. However the next day things really didn't look good. He had basically lost his coherence and ability to communicate well. It should be noted that he wasn't on any pain meds.

He would be semi-coherent for a while, then he was off to la-la land again. He was jibbering and not really making sense most of the time. This was hard for all of us since he had always been of sound mind. Well mostly ;)

So as the days went on this seemed to really not progress well, and the doctors really didn't seem to have a consistent reason for why this was. It came the time that we had to get back home for work, family etc. So on that Friday (Surgery was Tues) we headed back home. We hadn't a real idea on how he was going to progress or if he would at all.

I came home drained and exhausted both physically and mentally. It was refreshing to come home, but at the same time it was difficult not being there. Not just for my grandfather, but also for my grandmother who was going to have to deal with this all from a very different perspective than my own.

While I wanted to stay, I knew that I had responsibilities to tend to back at home. So we headed back home. Things stayed pretty much the same until Tuesday of the next week when we received information that he was again, mostly out of it, and unable to communicate.

At this point pretty much everyone said that he didn't look well and that they expected that this may be the beginning of the end. So based on this information we decided that we should all head back to Florida. This time Rachelle and I drove down with the kids. We left our home around 9:30 PM that night. We drove through the night to save time and money. When we where about to Macon, GA. we received a phone call from our family and they stated that he was sitting up and drinking his coffee. This unexpected news was very exciting as it seemed that he'd made a big turn around with his health.

By the time we'd arrived in Sunny Sarasota, he had been moved to a nursing home for Rehabilitation of his hip. His revived health and attitude was great to see. He was ready to work on his rehab and get back to the swing of things.

I had a great time visiting with him while I was there. We had some terrific conversations and some shared tears as we both shared our love and concerns for each other. When we left he was doing well and working hard to recover so that he would again be able to walk...

It really was amazing to see him back in good spirits and able to speak and remember and share just like I'd recalled. It certainly was a lot different than when I'd left him the previous week. I want to also thank you all for the thoughts and prayers. It has been felt in many ways!

I know this is well overdue, and late coming.. but I wanted to get it out there any way... (there is new news, that I will post in a new note!)

A Day at My Moms...

We went to Mom's house to see the "surprise" for the kids, turned out to be a trampoline. Kids had a blast, and Rachelle's Grandma Rush got to stop by for a little bit.

It was a fun time!

Mini-Marathon Results...

I must say that I was quite surprised today with my results. Obviously no Personal record, but it wasn't a bad showing considering my longest run this year was 5.75 miles. Thanks for all the well wishes and encouragement!

Feb 15th 2009

This was the day that I was supposed to have been running my second 26.2. But as you know from my lack of blogging about it, well I've not been training for the last 6 months.

Whats sad is that I continue to get email reminders and news bites from the race. I must admit its a little frustrating to know that I let myself slip away like I did.

I'm starting to get back into the groove though I must say I'm still not over the routine hump yet...

So I keep at it, slowly.. I'm running out of time as you can see at the top of my blog page. I keep trying.

Till next time,

As you can see, he is already doing very well with respects to the Potty.

They just never stop growing do they?

Another baby !?

Wow, who knew... It was just recently that I found out that my wonderful wife of 10 years is once again pregnant. I guess it isn't the end of Diapers just yet eh'. In case you don't know we already have four wonderful kids. I really don't know that you could ask for much more from them. Yeah, sure they have their moments and we have ours, but all in all they are wonderful, sweet, kind and innocent.

So here is the interesting part of this information, you see back in 2008 we had decided that we where happy with our family. In fact so much so that we decided I would go ahead and have a vasectomy. So on Dec. 1st I did, and I'll tell you guys out there, it isn't that big of a deal so suck it up and do it for your wife. Because after she has birthed a few babies... Its the least you can do.

So I digress... just before the proceedure my wife had decided to stop taking her BC pill in the hopes that it would make her more "in the mood". Well if you ever look into it, you'll also find that your Dr. will tell you, that the proceedure isn't immediately active. In fact there are a number of residual swimmers and it takes time to clear them out.

So we had decided to play with fire a little in Dec, and didn't really do anything special in the interim. In Dec, just before Christmas it was her time and well it was late... We actually thought wow, it just may be happening... Which at that time we where really neither her nor there on the idea. So I got to march my little self to CVS where I had researched for the test that had the best performance for detecting the hormones... Test 1 was a negative, and so was test 2. Test three was just well, left in the box because that night the wait was over... and we where again without worry. I think we where both a little sad it wasn't positive.

Enter Jan 22nd 2009, when I'm working like usual here in the office and along comes my wife... Next thing I see is a test on my desk, and HOLY CRAP, it had two lines... (See the Photo) Now mind you by this time, we had both finally cleared our mind of having another baby. In fact, the little guy Brendan who is almost 2 now had just started potty training and the end of diapers was in sight. Imagine the surprise we both had for this. It is amazing, that we get to go through this process again, we both know what to expect (of course we do, we've done this 3 times before). We also know what not to expect, each pregnancy is different. BTW: she *thinks* she is about 3-4 weeks into this, and suspects her due date will be around the first week in Oct. 2009.

We both enjoy so much our family, it truly is a joy to have a great family. I just hope that we can help to sculpt them into great little people over time. We have such great family and friends, and friends who are family. I can say that we are truly blessed to have such a great group of friends. The next 8/9 months is certainly going to come an go quickly it will be done before we know it.

Now you are in the know, and I thank you for reading, it has been fun! Thank you for your support and prayers it really is appreciated. I think we are all hoping for a little girl, Rachelle has already said she is going to ask everyone she knows to get one cute girly outfit for the baby when she finds out it is a girl. Lord knows we could use a little less testosterone in this house.

Take care, stay posted here and God bless.

Back in the swing of things...

So this week starts my official 16week program on getting ready for the Mini-Marathon which is 5/2/2009. Did I mention that I am planning on doing a second the Geist Half Marathon on 5/16/2009. Guess this means it is time to get serious with the running. My goal this year is to break the 2hr mark and I must say that it is likely going to be a pretty tough challenge considering I have done little running since late last summer.

I've found that the Runners World smart coach works well for me. I've pretty much used it for all of my training. It has various options for how much running you're currently doing and what you have done in the past. I usually play with it till I get about what I'm looking for. :) I like the 3 days a week concept, I'm certain that some will suggest it isn't enough, but I can tell you it has worked for me in the past.

I tend to do my long days on Sundays, especially now that for all practical reasons football season is over. In fact, I did 4.32 miles just yesterday, mind you that was a combination of running and walking. I also often will push myself to go a little further than the schedule says... Its not a bad thing... :) usually.

Well I know that you're probably tired of reading about my running schedule. I'll try to keep you informed without all the gory details from now on.

Dare I say it.... I'm running again

I would not yet call it a routine, but I am back to jogging a bit. Since I got my new shoes I have run 2 times, not too much yet. I'm fat so I'm back to being slow and out of shape.

I did only 2miles tonight, but that is 1/2 more than Saturday.

I need to keep at it, send me good vibes!

New Shoes!

Well I got my new shoes today! A Christmas present from my mom! Thanks MOM!

So I went to the Running Company like usual. I had been running in Asics for the last several years but my last pair the Gel Nimbus 9 wheren't as comfortable as the version VII that I had previously.

So I wanted to have a test on more brands to see what was available. This year I landed with some new Brooks Defyance 2. These feel more form fitting and the toe box is nice and open feeling not so constricted like the last pair of shoes. That feeling was actually why I got the original Nimbus 7's. It really is too bad that the Asics changed.

I ran 1.5 miles on the treadmill today, the shoes fit great, and feel comfortable. Time will only tell if they will stand up to the 200+ miles that the Asics did. Looking back, my Nimbus 7's had over 266miles on them, and my nimbus 9's have over 220.

Incase your wondering how I know, well I use the Runners World Training Log, which btw isn't just for running. If you run, you should certainly check it out.

The Mini-Marathon is May 2nd this year, my goal is to break the 2hour mark. Gotta get moving. I am finally getting over my killer sinus infection that has been bringing me down for the past 2 months. Why I wait so long, I do not know, but it sure does feel good to feel better!

TTFN,
-matt-
